“I wish you a very peaceful holiday and a delightful new year ~ David Bowie 2011”

would you happen to know what that liquid type of substance is on davids collar bone on the aladdin sane cover? it bugs me everytime i see it cause i dont why its there, or if it was put there on purpose for some reason.

It is supposed to be a small pool of water, adding to the overall impression of Bowie as a statue.

David Bowie appeared on the show with Bing

Bing Crosby gained fame for recording probably the most sold song ever recorded, White Christmas. Penned by Irving Berlin and recorded by Crosby, it blew away the standards for a hit. That was in 1942. He made movies, recorded more hits, and enjoyed a career that lasted to the end of the 70′s.

Starting in the late 60′s, Bing started doing Christmas specials. He usually had very family oriented performers and the shows were, for lack of a better word, very safe. Imagine my, and I imagine most of the world’s surprise, when in 1977, for Christmas,  appeared on the show with Bing. He talked about his boy, joked, and otherwise acted as safe as Roy Clark would have. It was SHOCKING! Together they performed Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy, which was very beautifully done. They fit and countered perfectly. Later in the show, Bowie introduced ‘Heroes’ to the public in the form of a video ( not a normal move in those days ).

I was stuck in a small hotel room with my entire family somewhere in Florida during that Christmas. We were all in one room the night Bing’s special previewed. I had to turn the tv around backwards and cover the entire thing with a blanket to keep the light from bugging my parents. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to hear it very well ( I have never had much hearing ), so I took a cassette recorder and crammed it against the tv so I could play it back later. The tv sent as much sound out the back as it did the speaker, so my dad started yelling and cussing about 2/3 through Heroes. I treasured that recording until it eventually disintegrated. I bought the album, only to find out the song was actually about twice as long as the video, and the video cropped out the best part, “Maybe we’re lying, so you’d better not stay. But we would be safer, just for one day”.

I enjoyed that Bing Crosby special more than any other, even if I couldn’t hear much of it. The one person who never got to see the special was Bing himself, he died before it was aired.

Love the pic of in his underwear. Where did you get it from? Thought I'd seen just about every Bowie pic ever so this is a new one - can't miss a potential new bowie hunting ground!!!

The swimsuit picture? I don’t recall. It was quite some time ago that I came upon it. I do not know what the original source is, but it regularly makes the rounds among the fans.
Hi! How are you doing? I was wondering if you have any book suggestions about Bowie? I read one of those 33 1/3 books about Bowie's Low and I really enjoy studying his work. Do you know of any books along those lines that would give a professional, technical view of Bowie's records? I really don't like those bios that are all gossip. Do you have any suggestions? Love your blog! <3 <3

No, sorry. I haven not read any Bowie books. Ask around, I know that there are others who have read pretty much everything available.

DAVID BOWIE - TOKYO 1978

DAVID BOWIE
Hoping For A Little Romance [YOU J-002, 1CD]

Live at the Nihon Budokan, Tokyo, Japan; December 12, 1978. Very good to excellent soundboard.
Very good to excellent-sounding soundboards of  in the ’70s aren’t easy to find so this should please the fans.
Gsparaco of collectorsmusicreviews.com commented:
David Bowie completed an intense period of touring with the Low And Heroes tour, which ended with Bowie’s second ever trip to Japan. The five shows were booked in Osaka and Tokyo, ending on December 12, 1978 at the NHK hall. An hour of this show was taped and broadcast on television and is the source for the LP boots Merry X-Mas Mr Bowie (Audio Recording Corporation ARC 1001), David Bowie At Judo Arena (Budokan) (IPS IP-C-8881 A/B), the CD releases Wild Mutation (BOW 006) and Hoping For A Little Romance (YOU J-002) and the DVD title Last Night Of Low And Heroes Tour (GoodFellas Recosrds GFP V02).
The general opinion is that the sound quality on Hoping For A Little Romance is very good as compared to Wild Mutation. The nine-minute interview is from Japanese television.
Thanks to the person who shared the tracks on the net in 2005.
A near-complete version of the show has surfaced as Blackout (Wardour-084). As Gsparaco noted: “It is a distant recording with some distortion in the lower end. There is a small cut in ‘Blackout’ at 2:58, but it’s otherwise complete. Hardcore Bowie collectors might find it interesting to hear the final show complete, but the sound is too prohibitive for casual collectors.”
