A Million in Prizes: The Anthology

"Basically, what I was, was a young guy who was convinced that the sort of possible lifestyles outlined for me in my society weren't worth living, so I made a conscious decision to use literate means to break out of those forms and those molds, and try to lead what I thought would be a superior life, based on success, not in terms of money..but in terms of immortality, and doing something worthwhile with my immortal soul. That's creativity."

- Iggy Pop, 1988

To make a good collection of Iggy Pop's work wasn't going to be a challenge. Not for nothingm he is regarded as a Punk god. The collection is always going to be good if you put in, along with the amazing solo stuff the likes of Lust For Life, Some Weird Sin, The Passenger and what-not, stuff from his early years with the Stooges, and the brilliant Search and Destroy, that I think exibit Iggy's best vocals ever, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Gimme Some Skin and all that jazz. There are some weak track, nobody with such a long career could ever not have had a misstep. But it's mostly a great anthology for a great and exciting music artist.

Yeah, disc 1 is the essential one.  I'm glad to pay and let the guys get some royalties again.  Besides, I'm really too lazy or too busy, I forget which one it is, to rip my vinyl to ogg files.  Disc 2 with Ig's solo career is ok too.  A few great songs, a few interesting contrasts.  Curious that I would have made more significant different choices if I was to make my one anthology of the later stuff.

I wonder what happened to my kill city EP.

I love The Stooges but I don't care much for Iggy's solo work. The CD2 of this compilation is almost unlistenable in its scattershot quality.

Absolute classics: 1969, Search and Destroy

Other great tracks: No Fun, Down on the Street, I Wanna Be Your Dog, The Passenger, Lust for Life

Also: Gimme Danger, I'm Sick of You, Nightclubbing, Kill City, Sister Midnight, Some Weird Sin, I'm Bored, Candy, Look Away, Mask
